What Can Cloud Observations Tell Us about Climate Variability?

چکیده

Clouds have a large impact on the Earth’s radiation budget and hence have the potential to exert strong feedbacks on climate variability and climate change. These feedbacks are not wellunderstood, so it is essential to investigate observed relationships between cloud properties and other parameters of the climate system. Suitable cloud datasets based on surface observations and satellite observations are described and various advantages and disadvantages of each are discussed. In particular it is noted that significant inhomogeneities likely exist in the datasets which have important implications for studies of climate variability. Recommendations are made for the use of cloud data in future investigations.

What does global mean temperature tell us about local climate?

The subject of climate feedbacks focuses attention on global mean surface air temperature (GMST) as the key metric of climate change. But what does knowledge of past and future GMST tell us about the climate of specific regions? In the context of the ongoing UNFCCC process, this is an important question for policy-makers as well as for scientists. The answer depends on many factors, including t...

Aerosol-cloud interactions: What do in-situ observations tell us and how can it constrain and improve modeling of the indirect effect?

The effects of airborne particulate matter (“aerosols”) on clouds (known as the “aerosol indirect effect”) are potentially one of the largest impacts humans have on climate. Even more important, the indirect effect is currently thought to have a net climatic cooling effect, largely offsetting the warming from greenhouse gases. Despite its importance, the indirect effect is one of the most uncer...

Climate Change at Yucca Mountain: Lessons from Earth History

Yucca Mountain's suitability as a nuclear waste repository stems largely from its very dry climate and deep water table (Bodvarsson et al. 1999). The facility's ultimate goal is to isolate waste materials for more than ten thousand years (Whipple 1996). And there lies a crucial question: How can we tell whether the climate and hydrologic conditions at Yucca Mountain will be stable enough beyond...

First published January 18, 2012; doi:10.1152/jn.00724.2011.—Eye movement behavior is variable, and the brain’s oculomotor circuitry may not always function consistently. In a recent fMRI study, Ozyurt and Greenlee (2011) correlated the acti...
